On September 19th, 2018, I went public… This is the date that I made the leap from private documenting to sharing on the internet. It wasn’t a huge leap because I did everything at a very basic level. But first let’s jump back.
According to my Goodreads account (which if you’re a reader you should definitely use to track what books you’ve completed), I finished the book, Show Your Work on May 11th, 2018. This is the second book in a series by Austin Kleon about creativity and inspiration and more. I loved his first book, Steal Like an Artist, where he encourages his readers to be creative “brokers” and to “steal” multiple ideas from multiple sources in order to enhance your own creativity.

Anyway, I highly recommend his first book. His second book followed up by encouraging the readers to literally “show their work.” The call to action of this book, to make your creative content public for the world to see, is really what inspired me to transition from a private “business journal” to an online blog. And so on September 19, 2018, I published my first ever blog post.
Again, I did everything simply. I ended up doing my blog using the free version of Wix. The URL (given it was a free version) was extremely tacky and long. But hey, I didn’t care. This small step was symbolic of me putting myself out there.
So that is why I stopped writing the journal that had been only on my computer. I started blogging publicly instead. In fact I actually got some of my blog post ideas from my business journal.
A big step in all of this, was just being willing to put my work online for the world to see. It feels kind of scary, even though no one (besides your mom and dad maybe) knows about, reads, or cares about your blog initially. This was a first step into the online world that I needed to take. And boy am I glad I did!
